Upside Down Ugly Cake

So this isn’t the prettiest cake in the world, but what it lacks in looks boy does it make up for it in taste! It goes together quickly and definitely is a cake worth making when you need a dessert fast that can wow. As you can see it dresses up well. I used a chopped up butterfinger bar on top but any kind of candy bar will work. I had forgotten all about this recipe until today when I was working on redoing my website at That’s My Home and found this in Mom’s Diner. I hadn’t made it in years.

I baked it in a 10 inch round pan. You are going to add the chocolate cake mix on top of the cocoa, brown sugar and mini marshmallows. The marshmallows will melt into the topping. Let the cake cool almost all of the way before you turn it over unto a serving dish. If you do it too soon the topping will run off. If some of the topping sticks to the pan, just use a knife and smooth it back on the cake.

Upside Down Ugly Cake is chocolate cake self frosts itself and makes a decadent dark chocolate topping. Topped with whipped cream and a Butterfinger candy bar.
Ingredients
  • 2 cups mini-marshmallows
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 chocolate cake mix
  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 2 cups hot water
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350ยบ
  2. Prepare chocolate cake mix according to the box. Mix marshmallows, brown sugar, cocoa, and water in a bowl.
  3. Pour into a greased 9 x 13 pan. (I used a 10 inch round) Spoon cake mix on top of marshmallow mixture, but don't mix them.
  4. Bake for 45 minutes. Then after the cake cools, flip over onto a cookie sheet. Be careful the marshmallow mixture might run. No need to frost.
