German Tomato Soup is made with ground beef, onions and cabbage in a tomato based broth.
The Villager’s German Tomato Soup
This was one of mom’s favorite soups. Years ago when I sold real estate I listed the house of a woman who cooked at the Villager at the time. She shared the recipe with me. It is easy and pretty quick to make.

Ground beef, cabbage and tomatoes make up this tasty, delicious soup. Perfect on a cold winter day.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 lbs. ground chuck
- 1 49 oz. can tomato soup
- 3/4 head cabbage shredded
- 4 T. A1 Steak Sauce
- 3 T. worcestershire sauce
- 1 C. chopped onion
- 1 C. water
Instructions
- Brown ground chuck and onion, add cabbage and water. Cook until cabbage is tender.
- Add A1, tomato soup and worcestershire sauce.
- Heat through and then add 2. C. milk. Bring to just before a boil and serve.
Note: You could also make this in the crockpot and let it cook all day. I would brown my ground beef first if doing that.

Why is this German?
Mary Ellen says
Good question I have no idea, I just know that is what the restaurant called it. I have often wondered the same thing when I make it.

I had to check this recipe out, since I come from a good German family. There is something just amazing about beef (or pork), cabbage (or kraut) and tomatoes. This looks like a recipe my grandma used to make- thanks for sharing at Saturday Dishes!

Thanks Jamie, I had someone ask me what is German about it? I think you answered that question. I honestly wasn’t sure. This recipe comes from a restaurant in my hometown. Back when I sold real estate I listed a house of someone who cooked there. This was my mom’s favorite soup so I wanted to be able to make it for her.

I think they are calling it German because of the cabbage, I know all my friends joke about our family because of all the cabbage they say we Germans eat! Works for me I’m going to make this sounds soooo tasty!
Mary Ellen says
That is what I always thought too Didi!

Just needed to clarify T. Is for teaspoon?
Our favourite restaurant in Hamilton, ON makes German Tomatoe Soup and it is one of our favourites.
I can’t wait to try this one.
Cheers and Happy New Year!
Mary Ellen says
T. is for tablespoon. I didn’t realize I still had recipes done that way on this site. It’s how my mom did it and little t. is for teaspoons.

Hi there. This looks amazing and very similar to my dad’s favorite. I wanted to ask for clarification on one thing. For the tomato soup, are we supposed to use condensed and if so, do we dilute it? Or should we be using non-condensed? Thanks!

I’ve been looking for a good recipe for German Tomato Soup. I keep asking the owner for his recipe. He won’t give it up. The restaurant is also called The Villagers. I’m just wondering if you lived in the same town I live in. I noticed though that they put diced tomatoes in theirs also.
